About Us
Eighth Wonder offers heirloom rice from the famed mountain terraces of the Philippines. Each of our heirloom varieties has its own distinctive flavor and aroma, with extraordinary taste and texture. Our rice is highly aromatic, distinctively delicious, visually beautiful and cooks in 20 to 25 minutes. A gourmet experience direct from nature!

We are a socially responsible business that imports select varieties of heirloom rice from the famed mountain terraces of the Philippine. Eighth Wonder operate in more than 18 communities, directly supporting sustainable agriculture and socio-economic development. We are furthering the model of fair trade to include farmers as full economic partners in this international business. Together we are building a bridge between the centuries-old tradition of growing rice and the economic opportunities of the 21st century.

Mary Hensley is project developer and founder of Eighth Wonder. A former US Peace Corps Volunteer in Kalinga (1976-78), Mary found the framework for Eighth Wonder in her master’s class on Social Entrepreneurship at the School for International Training, Brattleboro, VT. Since completing that original business feasibility study, she has worked to build a sustainable and culturally appropriate economic enterprise in the Cordillera.

Vicky Garcia, founder and executive director of RICE, Inc., has extensive experience in community organizing, capacity building, and program planning and evaluation. Vicky has worked in national government positions, as well as in international and local NGOs. She is a strong advocate of the rural participatory approach (RPA) to increase community participation in community-based projects.

Vicky and Mary met in September 2001, during their first week of graduate school. Since December 2004, they have worked together on the Cordillera Heirloom Rice Project. They both received masters degrees in Management from the School for International Training.
